“I am ready,” Jane said.

“Ready?” Bingley enquired.

“Well…not exactly ready. But my relations and yours will be here within the week, and ’tis probably best to–to be more comfortable by then.”

“Ah. To see your sister, you mean.”

“Yes.”

“Do you envision it will be an uncomfortable meeting? You do not show any discomfort with Mrs Reynolds or any of the household who are Other.”

“They are not Elizabeth. I do not expect you to understand, but we were so close. If she is too changed, I will not be able to disguise my response. She has always been perceptive and will see it before I can grow accustomed to the differences. I will, I am sure. But I would not have her feelings hurt because I am too timid to accept her easily.”

“All will be well.”

“How can you be so sure?”

Bingley smiled warmly. “Because you have already accepted that she has feelings, and that, like the Elizabeth of old, she is perceptive. You acknowledge the ways in which she is likely the same. I am not anxious for you at all.”

Jane looked at him, concern in her eyes. “I hope you are correct, sir. So much.”
